The ancient monastery of the Holy Cross never ceases to impress visitors, who can never resist trying to capture the unique beauty of the sight.
Going up to Anoyira between carobs, almonds and vineyards, the ruins of the monastery unfold to the right of the road. The monastery of Timios Stavros is located in the area of an Early Byzantine settlement, known as the “Anoyiron country”.
The church itself is built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica and dates back to the 14th century. Part of another, three-aisled basilica, after the original, stands in the same place.The church which operates today, is one-aisled, with arched ceilings and a tall dome, while on the inside it is decorated with frescoes, worn, but exceptional examples of their era and style.
According to some sources, one of the crosses found in the monastery of Omodos, originally belonged to this monastery was moved there for security, during difficult times, under the direction of Metropolitan of Paphos. The legend says that there is an underground tunnel in the monastery area where the monks, who are said to have lived richly, guarded their treasures.
Archaeological excavations are under way at the site and it is estimated that the evidence that comes to light classifies this remarkable monastic complex in the important archaeological sites of Cyprus.
