A group of 17 Cypriot scientists have created a unique project known as NestFold, and are now shortlisted to the “Space Apps Challenge” competition held by NASA claiming the first place!
The distinctive project is associated with specific regions and areas that have undergone and suffered from physical disasters, wars and in general destructions. Basically, NestFold is a concept solution for the the important issues of homelessness and the vast numbers of refugees that are the consequence of such disasters. The solution that the group of scientists came up with was, a shelter that is to be made accessible to these areas either by placing them in certain areas or with the use of airplanes or helicopters that will throw the shelters from the sky. The innovative concept is to aid people that are trapped or stuck somewhere and cannot be rescued promptly.
The inventive product has the ability to endure many difficult circumstances such as earthquakes, floods, fire and in general natural disasters. NestFold is easily stored and assembled since it is foldable and can protect up to 18 people. The capsule offers other facilities like satellite communication, food supplies for up to 6 days, first aid kit and a range of other crucial elements that can assist in the rescuing and identification of people.
Awarded with the “people’s choice” award in Cyprus, NestFold is now competing for the first place at the international competition. Now at the semifinals that end on the 22 of May, the group of scientists are hoping to qualify for the finals, where 5 teams will be shortlisted.
