The Ghost town of Varosha was featured amongst the “14 Mysterious Corners of Our Planet the Travel Guides Don’t Mention” on Bright side. The article described 14 spots in the world that, for one reason or another, remain forbidden to ordinary sightseers.
Amongst places like the illusive underwater waterfall in Mauritius, the Ise Grand Shrine in Japan, the “Don-2N” Radar Station in Russia and the Lascaux Cave in France, the ghost town of Varosha in Cyprus was listed.
This resort, that used to be Cyprus’s top tourist destination until the mass evacuation in July 1974, when the deserted city was taken over by invading Turkish troops. To this day, Varosha remains fenced off, forming part of the buffer zone patrolled by the Turkish army.
